In 1995, Volvo Construction Equipment became a fully owned subsidiary of the Volvo Group. In the same year, it successfully acquired Pel-Job Group of France, a manufacturer of light construction equipment. In 1997, it merged with Champion, a Canadian motor grader producer. In May 1998, it acquired Samsung Heavy Industries Construction Equipment Company of South Korea.
In early 2007, Volvo Construction Equipment completed an investment for a 70% equity stake in Shandong Lingong Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (SDLG), a major Chinese construction machinery enterprise.
At the end of April 2007, Volvo Construction Equipment globally acquired the Road Equipment Division of Ingersoll Rand, further improving its product portfolio and expanding its customer base and distribution network.
In China, Volvo Construction Equipment (China) Co., Ltd. was founded in March 2002 with its headquarters in Shanghai. Its factory, located in the Shanghai Pudong Jinqiao Export Processing Zone, began production in March 2003, mainly manufacturing crawler excavators. On April 14, 2003, the first medium-sized Volvo EC210B excavator rolled off the production line. On April 26, 2004, the first compact Volvo EC55B excavator was successfully launched.
On August 20, 2004, Volvo Construction Equipment (China) Co., Ltd. signed a second-phase land-use rights transfer contract with the Shanghai Jinqiao Export Processing Zone. The new land covers 60,000 square meters, adjacent to the existing Jinqiao factory. On July 2, 2008, Volvo Construction Equipment’s first China Technology and Customer Center opened at the Jinqiao site. The four-story building has a total floor area of 12,000 square meters, supporting Volvo Construction Equipment’s long-term business development in China.
